Always handy, the multiple Grade 1 winner moved effortlessly into the lead around 400m out, and without being pressed at all by Richard Fourie cantered to a facile ‘victory’.

The standard of the opposition he faced is uncertain, with only one of the seven juveniles in opposition having had an official race before.

However the big horse looked magnificent in the preliminaries, and Legislate strode out beautifully in the trial itself after a full two years off the track.

Afterwards a visibly elated Justin Snaith said: “I never thought in a million years I’d be saddling Legislate again. You get good horses and you get champions, and you get horses like Legislate”.

He went on to vocalize the thoughts of many a racing fan when he said that he was “just so happy to have him back”.

Snaith also indicated that the Rising Sun Gold Challenge on June 9 is a possible first proper race for Legislate, but his long term main mission will be the L’Ormarins Queens Plate in January.

He is of course also nominated for the Vodacom Durban July, a race he won in 2014.
